Founder & Lead Mechanic
Andrew Wright
With over 16 years hands-on experience building, servicing and handling rescue boats, Andrew Wright is the founder and director of Western Australian businesses: Shockwave Marine and Stem 2 Stern. The symbiotic relationship across these businesses, which share a workshop, provide a one-stop shop – from design, build, fitout and finish, to service, maintenance and repair.
Andrew is a passionate contributor to Volunteer Sea Rescue, with thousands of hours spent on various models of rescue catamarans. This intensive, first-hand experience handling boats in all manner of conditions informs his innovative approach to designing and building catamarans that are safe, sturdy, easy to handle, light and comfortable for drivers and passengers. These qualities also ideally suit the recreational sector, which Shockwave Marine has now entered. Andrew prides himself on building ‘the safest cats in Australia’ for both rescue and leisure.
A stickler for quality, Andrew ensures that his businesses install the best tech, mechanical and electrical systems. This ethos also translates to how he recruits and manages his team, employing craftsmen and specialists with proven hands-on experience and trainees who exhibit a dedicated work ethic.

Apprentice
Sam Kay
Sam grew up in boats. He came to Stem2Stern after watching how well the company operated when his father’s boat was serviced here. Helping run the workshop, doing anything that’s required of him, he says is a great experience. He says, “it’s a great working environment, everyone is friendly, and the workshop is clean and organised, so that makes it easy to work well with each other“.
His advice to others who may think about doing this work is to be confident and take pleasure in all you do. After work hours, when he’s not on the water in his dad’s boat, cruising and fishing, Sam loves to be in it – surfing. The rest of the time he is on the footy field, playing several times a week.
Mechanic
Luke Cornally
Luke loves fixing things and a good challenge. He’s a problem solver.
Having come to Perth from NSW for this job, he says, “the workshop here is like no other. It’s clean, it’s big, and well-organised. We work as a big team, helping each other. And the boss is awesome“.
Luke spends his free time with his awesome kids, and there’s nothing he likes more than the beach, being in the water, and mucking about in boats.
Accounts Clerk
Natasha Wright
Tash keeps everyone in line and doesn’t miss a trick whenever the mighty dollar is concerned. Tash accurately processes a high volume financial information on a daily basis yet still has a sense of humour. Tash is the mother of a young family and spends her quality time off playing with her daughter Layla.
Fit-out Contractor
Jason Hill
Jason loves to see the physical manifestation of his hard work – the finished product.
With a background in marine engineering and a family history of lighthouse keepers and sailmakers, the high seas are definitely in his blood. He enjoys the breadth of work at Shockwave Marine and Stem2Stern. ‘We do it all. There’s method and practical understanding to how we build the boats and fix them. There’s a user-friendly approach‘.
Jason enjoys the fact that he’s not just a number at Shockwave, and that the team really pulls together. ‘People here have pride in their work which is great to see‘.
On his time off, Jason loves to hike – the longer and more challenging the better, thoroughly enjoying being in the big outdoors. Otherwise, he will be on a boat fishing, trading shares or spinning disks as a DJ.
Marine Service Scheduler
Jo Norris
Having a good sense of humour, helps Jo in her work. With 16 years in the banking industry behind her, she’s a constant learner, up for a challenge, and loves to meet customers’ expectations. She admires how well the team works together, “It’s dynamic. They work hard and have each other’s backs. And there’s a deep sense of trust and respect. And we still manage to have a good laugh“.
Having recently had the pleasure of going out on a handover, “The boats are so smooth, fast and safe. They have everything you could want. And it’s wonderful to observe the handover, it’s so professional‘. It’s hard to beat Jo’s enthusiasm. ‘I love getting up every morning and coming to work. Every day here is different“.
At home, Jo’s world is filled by her two Staffies, Harley and Willow, who love to make an occasional appearance in the office.
Sales Associate
Colin Holmes
Colin is a genuine advocate of the powercats designed and built at Shockwave Marine Stem2Stern’s sister company. “It’s a pleasure to promote such a beautiful product. In essence the boats sell themselves“.
With over 40 years’ experience as an Executive Vice President of sales, representing big capital equipment in Australian and the USA, Colin admits he couldn’t sell anything if he didn’t believe in it.vHe acknowledges that although the Shockwave Marine boats look amazing, “it’s the way they handle that stands them apart from the competition“. Converting an enquiry to an order can take anything from three weeks to two years, and the builds take twelve months, on average. “Shockwave is uncompromising in its quality. We won’t build something that dangerous. It’s a really good product but with Andrew Wright at the helm, it’s a really reputable company“.
When he’s not selling boats, Colin volunteers at Cockburn Sea Rescue and loves to turn reclaimed wood into beautiful pieces of furniture.
Marine Mechanic
Blake
Blake has always lived a stone’s throw from the beach and the ocean. He completed his whole apprenticeship at Stem2Stern and after two months’ work experience, he officially joined the team as an employee in 2019. He’s a team player and enjoys the variety of work. He says, “especially as we fix everything, from end to end. We get to know the whole boat, not just one part. That means we understand the boats better“.
Blake enjoys the camaraderie within the team, how well everyone gets along, and are not afraid to have a laugh. He says the best part is testing the boats on the water after they’ve been fixed, with the customer and seeing how pleased they are.
In his spare time Blake’s favourite activities are camping and fishing.
Rescue Hounds
Sadie + Leroy
More than dogs – they’re valued members of the Stem 2 Stern team. These canine companions now play an integral role in the daily operations and positive atmosphere of the workshop.
Sadie and Leroy are inseparable and both love going on fishing trips and taking in the sights and smells of the open water. Their love for fishing and boating adventures only deepens their connection to the marine lifestyle that permeates every aspect of Stem 2 Stern.
Former Crew Member
Ruby

Ruby’s contributions were notable enough to earn her recognition as an esteemed crew member of Cockburn Sea Rescue, even gracing the local news on multiple occasions. Despite her canine status, Ruby displayed a remarkable willingness to ride along in any vehicle, land or sea testament to her adventurous spirit.
